Smyrnea was the name given by Dr. Andrew Turnbull for his East Florida Settlement in 1767. He called it "bad Greek for New Smyrna" a name honoring the birthplace of his wife (Smyrna, Asia Minor--today's Izmir, Turkey). This sticker commemorates 250 years since Turnbull's settlement and acknowledges that the footprints of the Smyrnea settlers are still around us and many have yet to be found. Share the achievement of the largest British settlement attempted in the New World. Let's make sure locals and visitors alike never forget that our city by the beach is here because of them.
